Your privacy is important to The Abortionist and we are committed to respecting and protecting your personal data, and to being transparent about the personal data we are collecting about you and what we do with it.

This document in combination with the “Cookies Policy” make up our commitment to protecting all personal data we hold about our readers, customers, prospective customers, newsletter subscribers, website users and or any other data subject whose personal data we hold.

The Basics – Who we are:-

The Abortionist magazine is an online satirical magazine promoting the welfare and protection of the unborn child. We will send out editorial newsletters, electronically, and post on our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ and Tumblr). We will also work alongside other companies and individuals to provide subscribers with information on events, news, products, goods and services.

We may in the future contract a third party to sell advertising space on behalf of The Abortionist, who will have full access to all The Abortionist’s products and services.

Our commitment to you and legal basis for processing your personal data:

We are committed to collect, use, transfer, manage and safeguard your personal data in accordance with current legislation and best practice. Our aim is to be responsible, relevant and secure when using your data. Whenever you provide personal data we will treat that information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. We will process the personal data you have supplied to us to conduct and manage our business to enable us to give you the most appropriate information, service and products and provide the best and most secure experience. These are what we consider to be our ‘Legitimate Interests’.

Consent – By subscribing to our newsletters you are giving us consent to contact you and store your personal data. By giving your consent, you will continue to receive our newsletters and information about events, news, marketing materials and competitions that we believe may be of benefit to you.

You can manage your consent and withdraw this consent at any time by unsubscribing to our newsletters. The unsubscribe facility is at the bottom of every newsletter that we send out.

Contract – When placing advertising in our print media or on our website, or via our marketing service you are entering into a contract with us. We will need to collect certain information from you to carry out the contract and to send a request for payment. We accept payment via BACS or PayPal and do not store payment information on our systems.

Legitimate Interest – We may process your personal data based on a legitimate interest which may include promoting similar products or services via direct marketing activity, to manage suppression and unsubscribe requests received from you, to identify and prevent fraudulent behaviour, maintaining the security of our system, data analytics, enhancing, modifying or improving our services, identifying usage trends and determining the effectiveness of our campaigns. Whenever we process data for these purposes we will ensure that we always keep your personal data rights in high regard and take account of these rights.

What information do we collect?:

When you participate in, access, purchase or sign up to any of our services, activities or online content, such as magazine subscriptions, newsletters, competitions or events, we receive personal data about you. This can consist of information such as; your name, email address, postal address, telephone or mobile number, as well as information collected about your use of our services (such as when you enter our sites and how long you stay on them).

As a business customer, magazine subscriber or subscriber on our website we collect your personal data for account set up, invoicing and administration.  If you are a subscriber to our newsletters, we use your personal data to deliver marketing and events communication, providing goods and services, carrying out polls and surveys, internal research, internal development and improvement purposes, legal obligations (e.g. prevention of fraud) and meeting our internal audit requirements.

How do we use your personal data:- 

Newsletters:

If you register to receive our newsletter, we usually only collect your first name, surname and email address. We will use the details you have shared to send you the newsletter to which you have subscribed. We will not add them to any marketing lists unless you have consented to this. We will provide a way for you to unsubscribe on every newsletter we send to you. Details you share with us for newsletter subscriptions will never be shared with a third party.

Advertising in print, online and e marketing:

If you book advertising with The Abortionist and or register your event on our Events page on our websites, we will collect the following information:  your first name, your surname, a telephone number, email address and a full postal address.  We will use the information you provide to carry out the advertising service agreed to and to respond to inquiries or requests that you direct to us. Your data will not be added to any marketing lists unless you have consented to this and will only be shared with third parties where we have appointed them to manage specific aspects of your customer care.

Magazine Subscription:

We will use the details you have shared to manage your subscription to our magazine, which includes sending the magazine, managing access to any digital version, taking secure payments, to fulfil any gift that was offered at the time of purchase, to handle any customer query you may have and to contact you via telephone, email, SMS and post with information relating to your magazine subscription. e.g. to notify you of the expiry date of your subscription, that a delivery to you may be delayed or to remind you of a password or to notify you of updates to our Privacy Policy, Cookies Policies or Terms of Use.

Your data will not be added to any marketing lists unless you have consented to this and will only be shared with third parties where we have appointed them to manage specific aspects of your magazine subscription.

Competitions & Prize Draws:

We will use the details you have shared to manage your entry to any competition or prize draw. This may include your name, e-mail address and telephone number. We shall use such information to notify you if you are the winner. Your data will be retained for the period of the competition only and will not be added to any marketing lists unless you have consented to this and will only be shared with a third party where they were named at the point of data capture and you explicitly agreed to the sharing of your data or where they are a third party who we have appointed to manage the delivery of your prize.

Customer Services:

We will use the information you provide to deliver customer services and to respond to inquiries or requests that you direct to us. Your data will not be added to any marketing lists unless you have consented to this and will only be shared with third parties where we have appointed them to manage specific aspects of your customer care.

Direct Marketing:

We may use the details you share with us to send you offers and promotions by email, post, telephone or SMS wherever we have legitimate interest grounds to do so and where you have not objected. We will provide a way for you to opt-out of receiving marketing promotions both at the time of data capture and every time we contact you thereafter. You can also email admin@theabortionist.co.uk to request your details are suppressed from all promotional campaigns.

Data we collect through your use of our website:

We may collect information about how you use our websites or other content online, and the device(s) you use to access the services. This includes; Device IDs, IP addresses and other unique identifiers, your activity on our services and platforms such as title selections and browsing history. Information we collect about you from other sources:

Service providers that help us determine a location based on your IP address

Select partners that make our services available on their platform or with whom we offer co-branded services or engage in joint marketing

Publicly available information such as geo-demographic information and measures of capacity and propensity for giving to help us fundraise effectively and in line with our ethical policies from sites such as Companies House

Social media – depending on your settings you may have given us permission to access your personal information held by companies such as Facebook and Twitter

How we use your data:

We may use the information you share with us and the information we collect through your use of our site in the ways described above and as described at the time of capture.

Analytics:

Our website uses Google Analytics as its primary solution for tracking website visits, interactions and events. We use website analytics data to help improve the way we deliver content and online experiences to visitors.

Links to third party websites:

When you click on external links on our site, you will go to a third-party site, which is outside of our control. We do not accept responsibility for content, have no control over and our Privacy Policy does not apply to these companies, sites or content and if such third-party sites collect personal data, we cannot control how this data is processed, stored or used.

We advise that you read their data collection statements, which accompany any registration and their Privacy Policies before you submit your personal information

How we keep your personal data secure:

The Abortionist’s security policies, rules and technical measures have been implemented to protect your personal data from unauthorised or improper use and from accidental loss. Our data processors and employees that have access to or are associated with the processing of your personal data are obliged to respect the confidentiality of the data.

Our website uses https, which means that anything sent between your device and our servers will be encrypted. Our SSL certificate tells you that pages you visit on our website are provided by us.

We have put in place procedures to deal with any suspected personal data breach and will notify you and any applicable regulator of a breach where we are legally required to do so.

Who we share your personal data with:

We do not sell your personal data.  The Abortionist may form partnerships with a variety of carefully selected companies, marketing and event planners to carry out our day to day activities.  If the The Abortionist has new owners, the new owners will use your personal data in the same way as we have set out in this Privacy Policy.

How long we keep your personal data for:

We will hold your personal data on our systems only for as long as required to provide you with the products and/or services that you have requested.

Where you sign up to receive email marketing from us we will retain your e-mail address after you ‘opt-out’ of receiving emails to ensure that we continue to honour and respect that request.

Personal Data – Your rights:

Under the Data Protection Act 2018 you have the right to find out what personal data is being stored about you and without charge.

Your Right to Access, correction and deletion:

You may, at any time, request access to the personal data that we hold which relates to you.  You can request a copy of the data that we hold on you so you can check that it is a) correct, or b) to ensure we are processing the personal data  lawfully or, c) to check for inaccuracies or incorrect personal data, and request your personal data  be erased if you do not believe that we need to continue to retain it on our systems (Right to be forgotten).

Your Right to Restrict Processing:

Where we process your personal data because of a legitimate interest (see our reference to legitimate interest above) you have the right to ask us to stop processing if you feel that the way we process it will impact on your freedoms or fundamental rights, and or if you feel the ‘legitimate interests’ are not valid.

You may also ask us to stop processing your personal data:

a) if you dispute the accuracy of the personal data,

b) if you want us to verify the data’s accuracy,

c) where no longer need to process your personal data,

d) where it has been established that our use of the data is unlawful.

Your Right to Portability:

Because of the type of service, we provide, we do not believe this right is relevant to most individuals that we interact with.  However, if you want us to transfer the data to a third party that you chose, we are happy to do so.

Your Right to stop receiving communications:

Your Right to object to automated decision making and profiling:

You have the right to be informed about the existence of any automated decision making and profiling of your personal data

Exercising your rights or making a complaint:

You can exercise any of your rights and or make a complaint by emailing our data protection officer at: dpo@theabortionist.co.uk and providing as much details as possible, such as your name, address, email, telephone number, IP address, subscriber id or in the case of personal data captured via cookies, the IP address of the device you have used.
